Asian demand for vegetables increased
The group Coosemans, specialized in import and export of fruit and vegetables, is represented worldwide especially in the United States. Coosemans is also established in Belgian Kampenhout and Rudi Coosemans is the manager of this company. His brother Danny started the business in 1982 and then left for America. The companies, which are part of the group, each function separately.
"We have already for thirty years specialized in supplying chicory and other European vegetables to America, Canada and Asia" Rudi says. "I have been active myself in this company for about 28 years, of which 26 as manager. Various developments occurred in the area of customers over the last few years. It is striking that the demand for vegetables has increased strongly from Asia. We also notice this at fairs such as in Hong Kong."
In addition we also notice that more and more is grown locally. During the winter months only a few glasshouse vegetables are produced and this is more and more done for instance in Mexico and other southern countries and we make sure that from there the products are supplied to buyers. Production areas are changing and and we can now supply all year round. Originally this was only possible during the winter months, but the cultivation period in other countries is being extended all the time. Till a few weeks ago we still supplied products from Mexico. Of course it makes a difference in expenses when grown there."
Coosemans in Belgium has five employees. Chicory is for them an important product.
"The market is doing well at the moment" Rudi says. "There have been various actions during the last few weeks and the export to America increased. This is mainly the result of the colder weather. Chicory is a winter product and the cold is favourable for the price. At the moment this is in excess of one Euro."
