Mexico: They extended asparagus harvest

Due to good yields given by asparagus cultivation during this agricultural cycle, the cut for the period has been lengthened compared to other years that is until February when the harvest season ends.

According to data from 148 Cajeme Rural Development District of SAGARPA, the
asparagus cut in the Valle del Yaqui begins in November and may continue up to 5 months, with good weather conditions.

In the case of the Valle de Yaqui this year the conditions have been favorable not only for grain crops, but also the cycles could be extended for vegetables, although in the specific case of the asparagus it has already extended itself for nearly two months.

Although in the Valle del Yaqui this crop is still relatively new, it is already giving yields up to 3.5 to 7 tons per hectare. Currently there are just over a thousand hectares of this perennial crop, that although it could be in production year-round, it is important to let it rest for when the optimal cut dates come.

This crop as well as other vegetable crops, are monitored closely by technicians of the Local Board of Plant Health of the Valle del Yaqui, since serious problems may show up becuase of whiteflies, thrips or earthworms.

SAGARPA has more than two years to encourage producers to plant this.
