NL: Cucumber sales difficult

Sales of cucumbers are very difficult at the moment. According to Peter Fes of the Cooperative Growers Association Best of Four it is all a bit disappointing at the moment. "There was quite some production on the market last week. After the Easter week-end prices decreased somewhat. This is also caused by the not so good weather of the last period causing the consumption to fall off somewhat. A number of cultivations are coming to an end. Next week some more growers will start their first cultivation change. I hope that supply will then be a bit less and that some space will be brought about in the market."

Last Friday the price of the 'forties' was about 16 cents, the 'thirty-fives' 12 cents and the 'fifties' 16 cents. "With these prices export to the Eastern European countries starts" Peter says. "Normally they only become interested at these prices. Unfortunately it is not possible to estimate what this year will look like in the long term. We can only make the best of it."
