Ron Beijer of Independent Fruit Trade

"Good market Indian grapes"

The demand for Indian grapes is good at the moment. "Sales of mix-punnets were non-existent for a while, but are doing a little better now. The sale of punnets is doing well and sales of grapes in small bags are really doing well" Ron Beijer of Independent Fruit Trade from Waddinxveen, Holland says. "The weather is not even favourable, but the market is doing well with the Indian grapes."

"The Chilean grapes had some quality problems as had the South African grapes. Therefore buyers now have to purchase Indian grapes. After these Egypt follows, but they did not have grapes as yet" Ron says. "And the quality of the Indian grapes is very good this year. Much attention was paid to this. Contrary to last year there are no spots on the grapes. Provided India continue to send grapes they will be in a position to supply the market definitely till the end of May."

The price of the grapes in small bags is around 9/10 Euro and the punnets are also sold at around 9.50/10 Euro. "And it is expected that the price will go to around 10.50/11 Euro" Ron says. "Germany being short of an alternative also start asking for Indian grapes and the Dutch, Belgian and Scandinavian retailers buy these as well. In addition India also export more grapes directly.
