US (CA): Low prices for dry onions

As the onion season is poised to begin in California's Imperial Valley, large supplies have caused market prices to remain low.

Prices for yellow onions have not been very good, says Jerry Valois of Western Onion Sales. He says this has been a result of too much supply.

“We've seen prices in the four to five dollar range for a 50 pound sack,” he says, “and that's below cost, which is about six-and-a-half dollars.” With harvesting set to begin around the 20th of April in Southern California, he says part of the reason for this has been abundant supplies from Northwest growing regions.

“The carryover from the Northwest was a little big,” he notes.

The USDA reported prices for 50 pound sacks of yellow onions to be in the $4 to $6 range on April 16.
