Netherlands, main export destination for Peru

Peru has done much, in recent years, regarding foreign trade and has managed to increase its exports dramatically. Among its export products the agricultural ones notably stand out, which are gaining greater recognition in international markets. Excellent quality, compliance and certification of their products, which meet the market requirements, ensure a good fruit.

Particularly noteworthy is the work done by the Peruvian government through its embassies, PromPeru and ADEX to support exporters and strengthen trade relations with other nations. The results are shown in the figures. While in 2010 total fruit export was USD 572,055,494 FOB, in 2011 increased substantially achieving total exports of USD899,159,847 FOB. It is expected that these numbers will continue to grow this year.

The main export destinations for Peruvian agricultural products are The Netherlands, U.S., UK, Spain, Hong Kong and Russia. Among the main export destinations for Peruvian agricultural products the Netherlands stands out, a nation that after strengthening trade relations with Peru in recent years, in 2011 became the first export destination for agribusiness of Peru.

The main Peruvian products imported by the Netherlands are: mango, grapes, asparagus, bananas, passion fruit juice (Passiflora), tomato seeds and tangerines. Meanwhile, exports that stand out are potatoes, onions and tubers from the Netherlands to Peru.

Avocado was the Peruvian product that was imported the most in 2011 by Holland.
In 2010, avocados and mangoes were the two major products for the Dutch market, both generating 38 million dollars (FOB) but in 2011 avocados achieved a significant boom making it the main agricultural product from Peru, imported by the Dutch market. 74 million dollars (FOB) accounted for avocado exports to Holland, while mangoes accounted for 46 million dollars and grapes, 42 million dollars respectively.

Other products that increased their participation in the Dutch market, were bananas and Satsuma and Tangelo mandarins. By contrast, asparagus exports represented a lower value in 2011 compared to 2010. While in 2010 asparagus exports generated 41 million dollars (FOB), in 2011 this number went under 39 million dollars (FOB).

Peru still is committed to agriculture and to increasing its exports, while achieving greater recognition in the international fruit industry.
