EU: Lettuce demand decreased due to lower temperatures

The decrease in temperatures and the worsening of the weather in central Europe seems to have tempered the supply of lettuce, which was doing very well up to now. This was especially clear from the first two selling days of week 14, as announced by the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI - Agricultural Market Information Organisation).

In Belgium prices are, despite the large supply, mainly stable, although at a weaker level than at the beginning of week 13. French product lost its price advantage compared to the Belgian product for a large part and as a result are ordered more carefully. The supply from southern French winter cultivation is, however, clearly decreasing. Also in Italy the supply from winter cultivation areas is decreasing.

Especially in the south of Germany cabbage lettuce grown in glasshouses is playing a more important role all the time in the classical trade via wholesalers. In general sales are going well; even during the Easter period no real price concessions were necessary.
