Wim van der Burgh, Ranbow International Ltd:

"Reasonable demand for Dutch tomatoes"

According to Wim van der Burgh of Rainbow International Ltd the demand for Dutch tomatoes is reasonable at the moment. "Most retailers have now switched to the Dutch product. There aren't big numbers yet, but within a week or two the volumes will increase a lot."

The trader indicates that in the daily business foreign wholesalers often protect themselves with low prices for, for instance Spanish or Moroccan tomatoes. "This is purely to get the prices of Dutch tomatoes down. I think some exporters will be sensitive to this, especially if they have some supplies. But I think that most exporters of Dutch tomatoes will defend at all cost. It will be a matter of time until the wholesalers also switch to Dutch product. And it will show that less is arriving from Southern Europe", he continues. "And quality and freshness will play a bigger role than just the price. And for quality and freshness, you want Dutch tomatoes!"

In price, it's not as good as last year around this time. "Despite there being no pressure, the prices of, for instance, vine tomatoes, are unfortunately lower than in week 15 of 2011."
