UK: Asparagus harvest gets going, again

The British asparagus season got off to an exceptionally early start this year, due to the warm weather. David Shepherd from Evesham Vale Growers was harvesting the first asparagus 2 weeks ago. He says it all came to a sudden stop when the temperatures fell again and only a small amount was harvested.

David expects to begin harvesting again next week and have some decent volumes in two weeks time, this of course is dependent on the temperatures. The rain in the last days has also been beneficial to the crop, but unlike the growers in the east of England, although the soil is dryer than normal, Evesham Vale Growers are not struggling for irrigation water.

David says it too early to predict prices for the season, but last week a bundle of asparagus was selling for £1.50, which is not bad for the time of the year.
