"Quality problems in Belgium and Holland"

Carrot market still calm

It's generally speaking very quiet on the carrot market. Belgian carrot suppliers Dendauw-Stragier, Grimex and the DR Fresh indicate that there is no export to Russia at the moment. "This is because there is no demand from this country." Where Russia is getting its carrots, the traders can't say. Normally Russia imports from Israel around this time, but the rumours are that they have set an export stop because Russia isn't offering enough for the products.

"It's very quiet on the carrot market", says Nicolas Vandenbogaerde of Dendauw-Stragier. "The prices are low and the quality also seems to be decreasing. The quality problems are showing up in Holland and Belgium." He hopes it will improve after Easter. "But we'll have to wait and see."

Guy de Roeck of DR Fresh also indicates that there are a reasonable amount in cooling, which are lesser quality. "It's quite quiet on the market; there is only demand from the East Block countries such as Hungary and Czech Republic." What will the coming weeks look like? "It depends on what happens. To start the sales up again the prices will have to go down."
