"Belgium: "Shortage of new harvest tomatoes in the market"

The local tomato season has already started, but the large quantities are still to come. According to a Belgian trader there is not yet enough on the market to satisfy the demand. "From various countries tomatoes are being requested, but we are not always in a position to supply, there is not enough in Belgium. Nevertheless I expect that the volumes will arrive soon now. I think towards the end of next week the quantity will have doubled."

"Especially the large sizes are selling well" he continues. "The smaller sizes not as well, but shortly they will also sell better." The exporter mentions that at the moment there is still a mix of Spanish- Moroccan- Belgian- and Dutch supply on the market. "As far as price is concerned there are quite some differences, but that is the result of size and quality. The difference in price between breakfast tomatoes and one size smaller could well be as much as 50 cents."

According to him the quality of tomatoes from abroad is disappointing. "The smaller ones are not doing too well. "The fact is now that more customers require quality and new harvest and there is a shortage of both. It is a pity we cannot offer these at the moment."
