Spain: Increase in watermelon area

During mid April the early cultivations of melon and watermelon will be harvested. The harvest is expected to be spread out, as good quotations on Winter products caused some delays in transplants. According to the source, in the Levante area and the Poniente area also, there was a rise in the watermelon cultivation area, due to low costs of labour which allowed investment in the harvest with grafts.

The change of cultivation is also due to the low profitability of melon in the last campaign. Initial predictions point out that during this Spring campaign the melon exports will be reduced, while watermelon exports will continue to increase. Main EU importers are Germany, France, the Netherlands and United Kingdom.
