Spain: Pineapple harvest starts

Tropical pine is the second most exported cultivation in Canary Island - the perfect growing area is the Gulf Valley in El Hierro, due to the sub-tropical climate. In fact this cultivation covers more than 60 hectares in the municipality.

Juan José Brito has been a grower for long time and reveals the process which starts with the care put in the land to be cultivated. In his case, he avoids chemical products and uses "pinocha" (pine loaf) for a better taste in the fruit.

A pineapple plant lives for only three years. Juan José cuts the pineapple once a week, getting an average of 1,000 kilos, in an all-year round production.

The cooperative in the fields of La Frontera, produce 15,000 kilos of pineapple every week.
