"At the moment the mango market is slow"

"Netherlands: "Short Peruvian mango season with good prices"

"At the beginning of the Peruvian mango season it was clear that the harvest would be smaller than last year. This was due to lower temperatures during the growing season", says Eryvan Pires of Fruitmarket. "The Peruvian season is now almost over. It was very short because it started later and there were a lot less volumes than last year. The quality was normal and the prices were good", he says. "The average price level was 3.75 Euro at the lowest and 6 Euro at the highest." He indicates that the season officially ends this week but that it's possible that leftovers might find their way to Europe, due to huge over production in certain areas.

According to Eryvan the mango market went well until the 23rd of March. "At the moment there are Brazilian Tommy Atkins and Peruvian Kent on the market, and it's going rather slow. The prices are around 4.50 Euro at the moment." He indicates that there are few Tommy Atkins on the market because the home market is paying good prices. "The quality of the mangos was good until mid March and now it's starting to decrease in some brands. The supply of the variety Palmer has been slowed down. "There's a shortage of 'Palmer by air'. This is causing rising prices. It's too early to tell, but Brazil's peak is expected at the end of May."

It's expected that the first mangos from Costa Rica will arrive in Holland this week. The first containers from Ivory Coast will arrive around the 20th of April. "A promising and good season is expected in terms of volume and quality", concludes the trader.
