Italy: season of early potatoes from Galatina starts

The season of the early potatoes of Galatina (Apulia, Italy) starts again. Volumes are now limited, the campaign is started on 10th March, 2012 with the product grown in greenhouse. The open field product is expected on 20th April.

As
Dario Tempesta, export manager of Finis Terrae, says to FreshPlaza: "90% of our supply is represented by Sieglinde variety, the other 10% by Annabelle variety. The quality of early product is excellent, although yields were reduced by the cold in February. Good volumes are expected for later varieties."

Germany is the main destination of early potatoes of Galatina, with 90% of produce. "Free arrival price is about 120 Euro/100 kg. An interesting quotation, higher compared to normal potatoes, as usual", Dario says.

These quotations should be stable for this week till Easter. "Later it is possible a reduction in price", Dario continues.

In short-term, Dario Tempesta anticipates: "I expect that in May the potato market will be more difficult as different products from different countries overlap."

The early potatoes of Galatina has the early potato of Cyprus as competitor, because they grow in similar fields (red ground).
