France: Fruit juice market stable, increasing prices

With 1.64 billion litres sold, the French fruit juice market has remained stable in 2011, despite a price increase of 7.6%. This was announced by Unijus, the national inter-professional union of fruit juices.

Between 2004 and 2010 a litre of pure fruit juice cost €1.50. In 2011 it was €1.61. This increase in price is due to a price explosion, which happened in the past three years. An increase in packaging costs also played a role: A tonne of PET increased in price by 50%.

63% was sold by large and medium supermarkets in 2011, 26% by the hard discount and 11% by restaurants, cafés, and bars. The pure fruit juice (49.8%_ has gained on the concentrated fruit juice (29.7%) and the nectar (20%). The sales of organic fruit juice has increased by 25% in a year, but only takes up 3.5% of the market.
