US: California Avocado Commission supports Oldways symposium
Oldways, the international non-profit organization widely recognized for its expertise with traditional diets, healthy eating pyramids and the Whole Grain Stamp, developed the symposium in collaboration with Barbara Ruhs MS, RD, LDN, a leading supermarket dietitian for Bashas’ Family of Stores (AZ), to support registered dietitians working in our nation’s supermarkets. With a theme of "Cultivating Healthy Food Traditions," the event was a unique opportunity for a select group of invited attendees to meet, network and brainstorm approaches to address today’s difficult health issues and tackle the universal challenge: how to help consumers recognize, buy and eat healthy foods.
"The Oldways Supermarket Dietitian Symposium provided an excellent forum for CAC to engage with supermarket registered dietitians and discuss the coming California avocado season," said Jan DeLyser, vice president of marketing for the Commission. "It was a great opportunity to share avocado nutrition information and innovative usage ideas for California avocados that can be used in their communication programs from mid-April through mid-September."
CAC sponsored a culinary demonstration with celebrity chef Hugh Acheson, chef/partner of Five & Ten, the National, Gosford Wine located in Athens, Ga. and Empire State South in Atlanta and well-known as a participant on Top Chef Masters and judge on both Top Chef Just Desserts and Top Chef Texas. Chef Acheson’s demonstration, titled "Making Your Cooking Demo Sizzle", featured his recipe for Roasted Pork Tenderloin with Bok Choy, Pickled Tomatoes and California Avocado. "We are thrilled to have sponsors like the California Avocado Commission who are as committed to public health as we are," said Sara Baer-Sinnott, president, Oldways. "To make a significant difference, it is critical that all parties - health professionals, retailers, food suppliers and academia - come to the table to share knowledge and create practical solutions and tools to help consumers change their diets and lifestyles for the better. It is because of our sponsors we are able to make this event a success and for that we thank you."
