Italy: Increase in strawberry acreage, latest CSO data shows

According to the last analysis of Italian CSO about the cultivated area destined to specializing growing of strawberry, in 2012 the growing of this fruit in Italy records an increase of 4% compared to last year.

More than 80% of areal is destined to plants grown under cover and 18% is destined to open field. The growing under cover has increased by 5% compared to 2011, open field growing remains stable. There is an expansion of cultivation in all areas of southern Italy.



Estimates show a growth of strawberry cultivation in the Campania region, a +5% compared to last year, as well as in Basilicata region (+17%). Increases are recorded also in Sicily, on the contrary the situation in Calabria is stable.

As for northern Italian regions, Veneto confirms its importance in strawberry cultivation, in particular the area of Verona. Further, an increase of cultivated area is recorded in Trento; the situation in the province of Bolzano is stable. In 2012 Emilia-Romagna region records a substantial persistence in specializing growing of strawberry.
