The Greenery have given the Institute Clingendael, Dutch Institute for International Relationships, the assignment to establish the importance of the European Union and of the Euro for the Dutch economy and for the fruit and vegetable sector in particular. On Wednesday 28 March, Bernard Wientjes, chairman of employers organisation VNO-NCV accepted the first copy of the report.

The report of the investigation shows that the fruit and vegetable sector have profited from the internal market, the Euro and the safety and stability in the EU. As a result the trade grew quickly and the Netherlands are the largest vegetable exporter in the world in the meantime. Also the export of fruit increased fourfold over the last 20 years. This produced a lot of jobs. The European rules in the area of food safety, environment and labour conditions made honest competition the rule. The Netherlands obviously is greatly interested in the continuation of the European achievements and the further strengthening of these.
Wientjes: “Good for The Greenery to make its voice heard"
On Wednesday 28 March Bernard Wientjes accepted the first copy of the report from The Greenery out of the hands of Philip Smits, general director of The Greenery. "There is a political discussion going about the future of Europe. Business cannot be heard enough, because the importance of Europe and the Euro is especially for business of interest. I am therefore positive about the fact that The Greenery make their voice heard and its supporters are being supplied with objective information about the importance of Europe and the Euro, so that opinion forming remains pure" as per Mr.Wientjes.
"We feel obliged to supply our own supporters with the correct information about the importance of Europe and the European Union. Investments in the European Union produce a high yield for our sector" as per Philip Smits. "In addition we again want with this attention to Europe to draw attention to the importance of the food horticulture as an important sector of the Dutch economy."
