Panama: Pineapple exports might double in next 7 years

According to Paul Vergara of VERBA Fruit, pineapple exports could double in the next 7 years.

First, through subsidies to the industry, as the Government pays 0.30 dollars per kilo of exported pineapple. On the other hand, the cultivation area can be raised in Panama, since pineapple is cultivated in 3,500 hectares, quite far from the 50,000 hectares of Costa Rica. The field, not so regular in Panama is an advantage since it avoids the accumulation of water which causes humidity and attracting rodents.

Certifications obtained by Panama require less chemical treatments and the range of fruit has more variety. For all these, it would help raise production and exports in the coming years.
