Cooperation leads to first shipment

Europe: Indian grapes from Bayer and Univeg

A global food chain partnership project between Bayer CropScience and UNIVEG Group has borne new fruit, with the successful first shipment of grapes from India to Europe. The cooperation between Bayer CropScience and UNIVEG Group is part of a global agreement between the two companies to develop and promote sustainable food chain partnership projects.

"We at Bayer CropScience are fully convinced that safety and traceability of fresh produce help to ensure that European consumers receive healthy fruit of the highest possible quality," said Ronald Guendel, Senior Key Relations Manager at Bayer CropScience. "We are well on the road to providing targeted and sustainable solutions to add value to the marketing of Indian table grapes on consumer markets."

"The cooperation with Bayer CropScience in India has allowed UNIVEG to demonstrate our long term commitment to the country as a key source of high quality grapes. The transparency and the control mechanisms of the Food Chain Partnership project have enabled us to restore the confidence of key UNIVEG customers in Germany and Austria in Indian grapes," stated Ben Horsbrugh, Director of Quality Management at UNIVEG Group.

Over the past three years, Bayer CropScience and UNIVEG Group have been working together in several projects in India, Chile and Spain. Bayer CropScience offered farmers - according to their individual needs - a portfolio of crop protection products, expertise in environmental protection, efficiency and safety, and trainings on pest and disease management of grapes. "We have the organization, the skills, the knowledge and the experience to develop and to offer customized solutions," Ronald Guendel added.

For traceability and record management, a "passport" was developed in local languages by Bayer CropScience, and was issued and implemented at every project farmer level. "As a result, farmers have been able to increase the production of high-quality grapes in a sustainable manner. The benefit for main retailers: they have been able to increase the availability of fresh and healthy vegetables meeting European consumer’s requirements in terms of food quality, safety, traceability and sustainability", concludes Ronald Guendel.
