Robert den Ouden of Liedo:
"Celeriac market is missing demand from Eastern Europe"
The sales of celeriac are behind compared to other years. "There's more supply than demand. And mainly the demand from Eastern Europe, which is supposed to pull the market up at the moment, is lacking", says Robert den Ouden of Liedo from Roosendaal, Holland. "There is some celeriac going to North and South Europe, the United States and Even Russia, but other Eastern European countries, such as Romania, Hungary and Czech Republic are far behind."
"This means the supply remains large. I get phone calls from growers every day asking me if I want to pick up their celeriac, but if the demand stays like this, we'll have enough supply for a while", continues Robert. "The tragic part is that more money has to go into it. The prices for the growers are below the cost price. Last year growers received 35 to 40 cents and at the moment they're around 12 and 15 cents, depending on the quality."
The traders says the quality of the celeriac is very varied this year. "There are groups with airco, but it's been far to warm for that. We have cooled mechanically and hardly have any quality problems." All in all Robert doesn't expect a market revival any time soon. "There's just not enough demand for the supply. The demand in Eastern Europe will have to pick up first, by, for instance, quality problems with their own supply."
Liedo Ltd is a family company and can supply the market of celeriac for twelve months a year, for the fresh market, cutting and for the industry.
