LIttle change in Belgian glasshouse vegetable area

The Belgian horticultural season is ready to take off again. According to Benny Cuypers of Lava not much has changed as far as area is concerned compared to last year. "There are some changes with tomatoes, but for cucumber, peppers and aubergines the change in area is minimal. There is a small decrease in area for aubergines compared to last season. With the tomatoes there are a little less loose and a little more bunch, but that is limited" he continues his story. "In addition there is with the tomatoes also an expansion in the Specialities, the small tomatoes. It is a matter of wait and see of how it will develop this year."

Cuypers says that the start was difficult for the peppers. "The starting prices for cucumbers are good to very good. With tomatoes there is a difference between loose and bunch. The loose ones are reasonable at the moment, but the bunch ones are more difficult. But this is only the start. Not much can be said about the continuation now. Many companies are still changing from Spanish to local product and that always takes a little time."

Benny expects the glasshouse vegetables season only to really start after Easter. "It is difficult to say now already what the season will bring. That is dependent on the weather conditions and the production." According to the salesman only a few Dutch growers were added. "Last season was difficult for everybody and perhaps it is good that the expansion is limited. As it is now there is sufficient production in all of Europe."
