US (CA): Abundance of cauliflower causes dip in price

With overlapping supplies from cauliflower-producing areas in California, the price of the vegetable has decreased.

Both quality and volumes of cauliflower have been good, says Linda Kivlehan of Coastline Produce.

“We just started shipping cauliflower this week,” she says, “and quality has been very good.” She adds that recent rains have also contributed positively to the crop.

Prices were holding steady between $7.50 to $10.50 per box, but as Kivlehan notes, those figures have dropped as new production areas have come online. The dip has put prices for a box of cauliflower between $6.50 and $7.50, but she says that as the year goes on, prices should come back up.

“Arizona is finishing up, Coachella winding down, and that should help the market,” she says. “When they wind down, the market should improve.” But she adds, before then, lower prices are just a product of simple economics.

“For what we have, demand's flat right now,” she says, “it's too much supply.”
