"Weather conditions perfect for melon production"
Colombia: Exports of piel de sapo melons to Spain
At the beginning of last week, the Colombian company Rio Plant SA, sent 8 containers of melon "piel de sapo" to Spain. "With this export we start our availability of 40 hectares, to be harvested that will be exported in an alliance with international clients", said Alberto Salgado from Rio Plant SA.
Melons "piel de sapo" began to be sent in green boxes of 220 kilos, that make packaging easier for the producer, exporter and clients in the exterior. "Instead of sending 12 kilo boxes, that would make it essential to have a packaging house and about 60 employees, we pack the produce in 220 kilo green boxes", affirmed Salgado.
Melons "Piel de Sapo" from Colombia, ready to be exported to Spain in units of 220 kilos "Green Boxes".
The production area for melons "piel de sapo" and watermelons is in the North of Colombia, in Fonseca, in La Guajira department. "The weather conditions are perfect for melon and watermelon production. It's dry and usually doesn't rain, or only a little. Anyway, there are no drought problems thanks to water dams they have access to". It's expected that it will start raining in May, but that will not have any affect since by then the last shipments of melon to Europe have already been made.
Moreover, Salgado commented that the market and the price for the melon "piel de sapo" is quite good. They are open to the possibility of starting producing for other export markets.
"Today, there are other producers in the area that are just waiting for the results of our start-up. We just require automated packaging", says Salgado adding that in the Colombian market , consumers are reacting quite well to the "piel de sapo" variety, as it is still not that known in the country. Through an alliance with a Colombian supermarket chain of fruits and vegetables, Colombians are getting to know this variety.
