Germany: Good chance of asparagus for Easter

Asparagus at Easter? The chance of this is high, according to information from the Landbouwschap Rheinland-Pfalz. When the spring starts quickly and remains consistent, asparagus can be expect on the Easter menu. The weather conditions of the dry autumn to the extreme cold in February have promoted the cultivation.

In Rheinland-Pfalz around 200 companies are growing more and more asparagus. Last year the stalks grew on 1.137 hectares of farmland. This means the area in 2011 grew by 2.4% compared to 2010. In total the growers harvested around 5,000 tonnes of asparagus over the last few years.
