Bart Charetier, Herwi:

"We expect good chicory prices toward the summer"

"The past few weeks the chicory market had a short revival, but this week the price collapsed, at the RED-Veiling, Belgium as well as the Mechelse veiling", says Bart Charetier of Herwi. "The prices have been good. This is mainly due to various actions in supermarket in Belgium and Holland, which caused extra pressure on the market. Especially the demand for loose increased."

"At the moment the prices for loose chicory are under a Euro again. For the finer ones 90 cents and for the more coarse ones 80 cents at the auctions", indicates Bart. "The packaged chicory are still doing well and are still above the Euro. The prices for packaged chicory change more slowly than those for loose chicory." He expects a good chicory season. "I think that the prices will stay reasonably stable in the coming weeks. The supply this year is smaller than in previous seasons. We've heard rumours from France that there will be less harvest. Due to the dry summer last year the number of roots decreased. We expect a good demand toward the summer and good prices."
