Italy: slow trend for potatoes and onions
The marketing office of Pempacorer, the Producers' Organization that sells Terremerse quality fruit and vegetables says: "For onions and potatoes, key products, the seasonal trend is slow, with stable consumption in spite of an abundant supply."
Prices are in sharp decline compared to the same period of last year, above all for onions. Probably it is due to the abundant supply of national product and the not always excellent quality. Reduction in price is also caused by a strong competition and very low prices of European production, mainly from France, Germany and The Netherlands.
The Terremerse production of potatoes (about 10,000 tons) and onions (10,000 tons), sold by Pempacorer, is destined mainly to the Italian market, normal trade and big retail. A part of the early product is sent abroad, above all to Germany and northern Europe.
Pempacorer is one of the major Italian Producers' Organizations in fresh produce sector, with 280,000 tons of products, 2,000 members, 22 associated companies (19 cooperatives and 3 firms).
Pempacorer guarantees daily arrivals of fresh fruit and vegetables on Italian and European consumers' table thanks to the integration of territories, production and seasonal cycles and its expertise.
