Jos van Dessel (MV) expects a good asparagus season

"Each season the demand for asparagus increases"

The asparagus season started a short while ago, but the large volumes of the glasshouse cultivation only will start to arrive shortly. "A few weeks ago it was somewhat less and growers panicked a little, but that is over again. This is normal for the start of the season. First a short low and after that sales return" Jos van Dessel of Mechelse Veilingen explains.

"Prices are good and are in the region of 5.70 Euro for half a kilo. This is more than
11 Euro per kg", the commercial director continues. "Supply is also increasing. To-day the volume was 2,000 crates and this increases from week to week." Jos expects a good season. "We have already met with the growers and it all looks good. The arrangements with the trade are in place and show a good demand."

"Whoever does not offer asparagus does not count anymore"

"The last few years asparagus have really become a real spring product. Each season there is growth in supply and demand. This product has increased enormously in popularity with the consumer. In order to react to this demand almost every restaurant and shop have fresh asparagus in their assortment. Somebody who does not offer asparagus does not count anymore. Especially in the months of April to June inclusive. In that period the consumer wants asparagus. They are presently available all year round, but the customer asks for them mainly in these months."

According to Jos much has changed in the last ten years as far as the demand for the white gold is concerned, "Then the asparagus was not yet in first place and now with many this is a product, which is appealing. The fact that asparagus are advertised more and more, such as during cooking programs on television, has played an important role in this. Also with the forgotten vegetables is this the case. The more they are shown, the more the demand increases. This adds surplus value to our vegetables."
