Gert-Jan Slobbe of Fortuna Frutos

"Canary Islands tomato market not bad since mid December"

Gert-Jan Slobbe of Fortuna Frutos is optimistic about the present Canary Islands tomato season. "After a difficult start it has not been bad since the middle of December. Prices are better than acceptable and also the supply indications for March and April look good. We will also receive tomatoes from the new harvest. All in all we will have tomatoes from the Canary Islands available till the beginning of June!"

The price of the tomatoes is between 6.50 and 8 Euro. According to the importer cultivation conditions are good. "The nightly temperature has increased somewhat and that is for the better as far as the supply is concerned." Although the total volume of the Canary Islands tomatoes has halved over the last ten years Fortuna Frutos has been successful in realizing growth. "This year our area has increased and next year we expect to grow further. Part of the unoccupied glasshouses in good locations on the Canary Islands will be used by the Fortuna Group for modern tomato cultivation" Gert-Jan says.
