Less ware potatoes sold in Germany

The German consumers bought less ware potatoes in the past year. The German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) recently announced that the purchase quantities of the private households concerned in 2011, decreased by 2.3% compared to 2010. Despite the constant prices the supply decreased more than in 2010, when large price increases caused a smaller demand. According to the AMI not all sales points had decreasing sales amounts.

While the discounter lost some market shares, the hypermarkets and businesses outside of the food detail trade did better. AMI also noticed a clear change in the supplied amounts. Especially in food shops more smaller amounts up to 2.5 kilos are being supplied. There are still differences between different shop types and there is also a regional difference between the popularity of the different potato cooking methods. The AMI concluded that Germany is still far from unity among consumers.
