France: Janny MT extends fruit storage life in pears
Janny MT, a French company specializing in controlled atmosphere equipment (from 1 to 150 tons), has modules that can better preserve fresh fruit. Depending on the variety and picking conditions, they claim that the storage life of pears can be extended by as much as two months over conventional cold storage.
The Janny MT module, a rigid plastic box which can hold 610 Liters of fresh fruit, has a special lid that controls the atmosphere within. A membrane on the lid allows the passive diffusion of gases inside the airtight container. The benefits of the container are that no added gases are needed to control the atmosphere and modules are used directly into a traditional cold storage.
“It is very important to consider the quality of the fruits to be preserved. The success of preservation is obtained thanks to a perfect supervision of the orchard and a harvest stage fitting controlled atmosphere requirements,” said Christophe Gratadour, Technical Manager of the Rhône agriculture board district.
Mr. Gratadour made the comments at an event comparing fruit preserved in Janny MT modules and fruit preserved in ordinary cold storage alone.
Mr. Gratadour added that oxygen, carbon dioxide and ethylene levels must be taken into account when using Janny MT modules, as those can be factors in the effectiveness.
If stored properly, the modules can significantly extend the storage life of pears. According to Janny MT, Williams pears can be stored in their modules for as long as three to four months where cold storage alone preserves the fruit for two to three months. Some varieties can be preserved by as much as 210 days.
Such storage capabilities, according to Janny MT, have several benefits, including longer sales periods, better flavor, good color and decreased losses from spoilage.
