Martin van Damme (Dacomex) about onion market

"Netherlands "Onion price not dependent on quantity of export"

"With onions we go from week to week at the moment. Every week I expect to be 'out of work', but orders remain coming, so that we have work to do" Martin van Damme of Dacomex, The Netherlands says. "We would rather stop and wait for the new harvest, but that is not possible with your clients, sorting companies and staff."

The price of onions is still at an unchanged low of around 4 cents. "At the moment we export some onions to Middle America and Brazil. Small quantities go to Africa and England. There is no news from Russia at all" Martin says. "But it is not very exciting whether one is busy or not, there is no profit in it. With all the risks when one wants to export a lot."

The quality of the onions is, according to the exporter, still bad. "One really has to look for good onions and not many of these are available. Normally there is between 4 and 6% tare and now with 10% tare you have a good lot of onions. Possibly a quarter or a third is not suitable for processing. But good lots are available, but these growers are not in a hurry to sell their onions. I do expect that during the entire season sufficient onions of good quality will be available to supply the demand.
