Peru: SENASA improves phytosanitary conditions for fresh asparagus export

The Ministry of Agriculture (MINAG) through the National Service of Agricultural Health-SENASA, initiated the project "Improvement of the Phytosanitary Terms for Green Asparagus Export," which is a proposal to implement a system of measures to mitigate pest risk of fresh asparagus for export.

The project aims to achieve minimum presence levels of the immature stages of noctuid quarantine, mainly the corruda Copitarsia species, and other pests, in export shipments.

The cost demanded by this proposal is S /. 4,418,345.20 investment, that will be provided by the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) and the private sector. The actions will run for three years in the main asparagus zones from Peru, that consist of the regions of Ica, Lima, Ancash and La Libertad.

The aim is to consolidate and systematize the methods of application of integrated pest management (IPM), which will allow better control of crops by plant production areas. It has also been considered the sponsorship of small producers, of agro-export companies.

This is a great opportunity for the asparagus sector and for our country, because we are the leading asparagus exporter in the world and 74% of production is consumed by the U.S. market.

Achieving asparagus health improvements will be of great benefit to continue exporting to various countries and will mean a great advantage to access to new markets.

The SENASA´s efforts, in coordination with the Peruvian Institute of Asparagus and Vegetables-IPEH, are seeking an end to the quarantine treatments for asparagus shipment, as these measures increase the costs of the marketing process and lowers product quality.
