reducing waste at Lulu supermarkets

Kuwait: Bio Conservacion launches Ethyclean gas filtration machines

Bioconservacion -a Spanish manufacturer of gas filtration solutions- has launched Ethylclean machines through their distributor Selem General Trading Establishment, in Kuwait with Lulu Hypermarket.

Ethylclean gas filtration machines help extend the shelf life of fresh produce. All fruits and vegetables produce a natural ripening hormone called ethylene. Even in small concentrations, ethylene speeds up the ripening and fungal decay of fruits and vegetables. Hence, the produce is spoiled even before it reaches the consumer. By removing air contaminants such as ethylene, odors and microorganisms, fresh produce keeps its organoleptical properties along the distribution network. Purifying air in facilities with high rotation of produce is essential, as air pollution tends to be very high.

Commenting on the technology, Selem’s Operations Director Abdullatif Alayoub said “Ethylclean machines are designed for forced-air circulation through units with a special granule and are installed inside fresh produce storage and distribution facilities. The granule consists of a mixture of porous clays and Potassium Permanganate and is a very effective oxidizing agent of ethylene and many other volatile organic compounds. This granule is not an additive and is 100% disposable. It significantly extends the shelf life of fruits and vegetables. Lulu Hypermarket, a leading mega market in Middle East is the first in Kuwait to install and benefit from this technology”.

Abdul Khader, General Manager Lulu Hypermarket Kuwait said,’ “We were equally excited to maintain the quality and freshness of our fruits and vegetables, hence decided to test the Ethylclean machines. The results are far above our expectations. Post–installation test results at Lulu have shown a successful elimination of bacteria, and reduction of ethylene gas levels thus resulting in longer shelf life and higher quality of our fruits and vegetables. This innovative technology is a welcome addition as it adheres to Lulu’s high standard of delivering quality products to our customers.”

Compared to other solutions the machines have a low annual maintenance cost and are environmentally safe. The technology has been extensively tested for the last 16 years and has been used in Europe & North America. The Ethylclean machines come in different size models, for different size rooms and to suit different market needs.
