NL: Quicker sales for firm coooking potatoes
It is totally unclear how the potato market will develop further according to Bram Werkman of potato wholesaler Landjuweel from Oosternieland. "Prices are low, but sales are not too bad. Despite the carnival period the local sales are as usual. Luckily people continue to eat potatoes. Only the export is at a low level."
"All in all the mood in the potato market is negative, but I think it is still too early to jump to conclusions. Much depends on the volume of import potatoes, of which the area is a lot less. This should become clear in the coming period, however. It is not easy to sell import potatoes, when the prices of the local potatoes are at such a low level" Bram says. "In addition prices vary quite a lot. I hear from 3.5 to 15 cents, which allows for a lot of possibilities. I hope, however, that we will be able to realise better prices towards the end of the season."
The trader notes, however, that the sale of firm cooking potatoes develop better than of the crumbly varieties, probably because of a smaller supply. Bram is quite happy about the quality of the potatoes. "There are of course lots with lower quality, but these you find in Germany, Belgium and France as well. But I do expect to offer good potatoes till the end of the season, although one may have to search
