Italy: Cold spell puts freeze on chicory harvest

Italian firm Geofur, founded in 1970 by Rodolfo Furiani in Legnago (Verona - Italy) and specialized in production and sale of chicory for 12 months a year, makes a balance about the cold wave affecting vegetables crops in February 2012.

Cristiana Furiani, marketing manager, told FreshPlaza: "There were harvest problems because products have been covered by the snow for several days. Still today, in some areas where we produce, we cannot harvest yet."

"Chicory quality is good anyway, even if yields per hectare are lower than averages. We expect that, given the situation, prices could be higher. The current ones do not even cover production costs!"

As for scheduled supplies, Geofur assures: "Despite the cold, we can guarantee scheduled volumes and quality to our clients."
