Rens Allewelt (Fruitpoint) signals increase smaller importers

"EU: "Alot of pinapples available for the time of the year"

Although the pineapple market normally suffers with shortages in February there is a relatively large supply at the moment. According to Rens Allewelt of Fruitpoint this is the cause of difficult sales. "There are more pineapples coming from Costa Rica than expected. This is a result of the climate. Especially the large sizes are available plentifully." Fruitpoint is a daughter company and representative of Banacol and Venecia in Europe.

Banacol itself grows pineapples on an area of 4,000 HA in Costa Rica of the variety Gold. Rens recently noticed the arrival of the smaller importers on the pineapple market. "Competition is somewhat larger as a result. With us a shipment has already been sold completely before arrival, but I doubt whether this is the case with the smaller importers as well."

Rens hopes that the pineapple market will revive shortly. "I understand that trading is bad all over. Once the carnival period is over again excuses for a bad market situation can be put into cold storage again."
