Austria: Potato market receives requests from East Europe

On the Austrian potato market the supply is still limited due to the cold. The low temperatures, on the other hand do have a positive effect on the export demand from Eastern Europe. The cold has led to problems in storage, which means people are prepared to pay slightly higher prices.

In Austria itself the sales remained regular, with the occasional revival due to offers. The first requests hint that after the end of the cold wave an increase in supply might take place. The growers prices remain unchanged: for medium potatoes the price is at nine to ten Euro per 100 kg. For premium quality with a long shelflife and the AMA or GlobalGAP certification it's 12 Euro per 100 kg and for oversized potatoes usually only two Euro per 100 kg.

The market situation in Germany
On the German potato market it is equally quiet. The cold limited the extradition and the transport. The available supply is enough to satisfy the current demand, though. The icy temperatures even have a positive influence on the quality of the potatoes. It slows down the germination. Due to the advanced physiological age of the potatoes a quick warehouse evacuation is expected in the next few weeks. It is expected higher prices will be asked for cooling warehouses potatoes.
