2012: The Peruvian Artichoke Year

Between 2005 and 2011, canned artichoke exports registered a yearly growth, on average, of 28%, going from US$44 Million in 2005 to US$123.3 Million in 2011. In the last year, the US was the main destination (57.7% participation), followed by Spain (23.1%) and France (10.5%). This three countries concentrate 91.4% of the total shipments. In 2012, canned artichoke from Peru presents a good perspective, with estimations suggesting that the growth rate will be maintained at least to equal 2011, despite problems in the Euro zone.

In fact, there's a growing tendency in export prices, reflecting problems in the offer of producing countries, like Spain, that were affected by low temperatures during cultivation.

In 2011, the main exporters of canned artichoke in Peru were: Sociedad Agrícola Virú (34.8% participation), Danper Trujillo (25.4%), Danper Arequipa (11.9%), Alsur Perú (10.1%), Open World Export (4.3%), Cynara Perú (3.8%), Agroindustrias AIB (2.9%), Camposol (1.8%), Agroindustrias Josymar (1.7%) and Agroindustrias del Mantaro (1.6%), that represent all together 98,2% of the total shipments, according to alert@economica.
