Fruit and veg shapes up for Valentine's Day

Love is in the air and the fresh produce world is getting in on the action! Strawberries are traditionally a Valentine's treat, but in recent years we have seen all sorts of fruit and veg being grown to meet the demand for something special on 14th February.

Heart shaped cucumbers have been on the market for couple of years now and the retailers have them on their shelves this year again. A couple of years ago heart-shaped watermelons were seen in Japanese stores.

Asparagus growers are also taking advantage of the supposed aphrodisiac properties of the vegetable, the UK record for the earliest asparagus was broken this year and British asparagus are already on the supermarket shelves.

We must not forget apples, which play a big part in the Valentines Day buzz. Pink Lady has a special promotion outlining the "Heart healthy' aspect of the fruit, Apple To Go from Austria have a special sticker for Valentine's Day and last but not least there are the 'I Love You' apples from Polish company Genesis Fresh.

The potato is also trying to get in on the act as a lady from Cornwall, UK was asking for a box of heart-shaped chocolates for Valentine's day she pulled a heart-shaped potato out of the bag!
