Damages for EUR 500 million

Italy: bad weather affects 80.000 hectares of vegetables

The Italian farmers' union Cia made a balance of damages due to bad weather, thanks to the data from regions, provinces and small areas. A total of EUR 500 million of damages is expected, with 50,000 farms and agricultural facilities destroyed by snow and frost.

As for the fresh produce sector, Cia estimates 80,000 hectares of vegetables will be devastated by the great cold wave (cabbage, cauliflower, radicchio, artichokes, endive, chicory, fennels). 10% of fruit trees, olive trees and vines have been destroyed. 150,000 tons of fruit and vegetables should be destined for waste due to transport problems, non-harvesting and damaged produce in the fields.

The adverse weather may reduce the commercial produce by 5-7% this year. In the last five years, a more than 20% decrease in producers' incomes is recorded.
