California carrot farmers are expecting the spring carrot season to produce good yields. Additionally, as imports from Canada drop off, prices for domestic carrots should rise.
Scott Laporta of Bolthouse Farms, a leading grower of carrots in California, says that the upcoming season looks good.
“As we transition to our spring crop in the Imperial Valley,” he says, “ the quality and yields look good, which is due to outstanding growing weather.”
Though the winter season brought lower-than-average yields, Laporta notes that growers typically see a rebound in the spring.
“Though the winter crop brought less than planned,” he says, “it's usually the case that the spring crop is better.”
He also anticipates prices should go up, especially as Canadian carrot shipments to the US slow down.
“As the Canadian cello crop is depleted,” he says, “our prices should move up.”
He notes a recent 5% increase in price, and expects that to grow in the coming weeks.
