"Chile has the big advantage, that there are few sicknesses because of its protected position with the Andes mountains on one side and the ocean on the other. In the north the desert and in the south Antarctica. The consequence is that only few plant protection means need to be used and there is sufficient water for irrigation. In addition there is modern infrastructure and there are modern varieties. Because of the enormous length of the country (in kilometres from Southern Spain to Norway) there are various production areas and as a result fresh products are available on the market for a long time" Andre says.
"This year looks promising. The climate is excellent, the quality high and the crop appears to be good. Wherever the grapes are doing well and are available, picking of Royal Gala and the first Packham pears has just started. Chile is slightly earlier this year than normal, which results in larger availability earlier in the season" van Tuil mentions.
"We have with our colleagues of Olympic Food Group arranged a balanced program of grapes, apples, pears and kiwi and with this we serve our clients on demand. From about the middle of February we are in the market with the first grapes and will continue the Chile assortment till the end of October with apples, pears and kiwi's.
