"Good prices to last for a while still"

Lower volumes Spanish peppers because of good weather last month

The Spanish vegetable season started slowly during October/November, but in the middle of January there was an improvement and increasing prices. Now this happens again. "Sales are doing well" a Belgian importer says. "Although we notice the day market to be quiet because of the cold."

"The prices of peppers are around 8/9 Euro. The yellow ones are even more expensive. With aubergines the size is important, but the price is also 8/9 Euro. Courgettes are also expensive."

At the moment less volumes come from Spain. According to the trader this is not only because of the cold weather. "From the beginning of the season till about ten days ago the weather was good in Spain. Logically more was harvested then and the production moved forward. The result is less peppers now." With the courgettes the main reason is the weather. "The smaller supply of courgettes is mainly the result of the cold weather, which we now experience in Spain. If the weather improves there will be a larger supply."

The local pepper supply will also be available shortly. Nevertheless the importer does not expect any problems because of this in the short term. "I think the good prices will last for a while." He mentions that he wants to continue with the Spanish vegetables for at least another month and a half. "But it remains difficult to indicate this exactly. It depends on all kinds of factors: the quality, the demand and whether the market will allow it."
