COAG AndalucĂa has reported that garlic producers are getting around 0.70 or 0.90 Euro per kilo, an amount that barely exceeds the production costs, which are around 0.70 euros per kilo.
According to Carmen Quintero, executive member of the COAG Andalusia, the campaign kicked off at around 1.30 Euro per kilo, but there has been a decline that has given way to a very delicate situation for the sector.
Carmen Quintero, who in the national garlic board meeting was appointed Secretary, has reported that producers are suffering significant delays when they start to charge, which can be several months and sometimes even years.
And sometimes, producers receive a lower price than what has been agreed upon in their contracts, leaving them "defenceless".
According to agricultural organizations, Spanish garlic especially suffers unfair competition from products that come from third countries such as China, Argentina and Chile, countries that do not grow garlic in the same social or environmental conditions.
