Spain: Banana and other fruits report for 2012

The market is balanced, despite a slight raise in amounts it is showing a tenancy to drop. The banana price is around 0.90 Euro per kilo for the ripe superior class.

Prices keep going up on the whole in Europe. Antilles (Martinique and Guadalupe) and ACP (Africa/Caribbean/Pacific) at origin have prices around 0.70 Euro per kilo. The rest is quoted at 0.80 Euro per kilo before being ripened for quality brands. It's expected that an important part of consumers will start consuming again and the Canary Islands banana will see prices go up.

For the remaining fruits, Golden apple (national and French) are at 0.70 to 0.85 Euro per kilo for the national and above 1.05 Euro per kilo for the French one. Royal Gala and Fuji (red varieties) are around 1 Euro per kilo.

Pear prices are between 0.80 and 1 Euro per kilo.

For kiwis is not that good a year, as it's price is between 0.65 and 0.90 Euro per kilo for Italian and 1.50 to 1.80 Euro per kilo for New Zealand kiwis. In three weeks time it is possible that Chilean fruits will reach EU.

Orange is between 0.55 and 0.80 Euro per kilo, showing how bad the year is going, as the farmer is charging an average of 0.09 Euro per kilo.

Mandarin is finishing. Late varieties of hard citrus (like Clemenville) is between 0.90 and 1.10 Euro per kilo.

The general consumption of fruits is halting.

Avocado is around 1.75 Euro per kilo, for national and Chilean ones.

Pineapple is quoted at 0.80 Euro per kilo.

Brazilian melon is sold around 0.90 Euro per kilo.

A review must be done as banana volumes are quite low and not enough for the EU, as China and Russia started buying in important amounts from Latin America and that will cause prices to go up in Europe for at least for two or three weeks more.

On the other hand, rain in Latin America is causing problems.
