India: Fresh Express starts grape packing

Packing has started with this year's Indian grape harvest. According to Nina Patil from Fresh Express Logistics, the growing conditions have been good, in fact ideal. This has produced better grapes and bigger yields. The company will start shipping in week 8, with the first grapes arriving in week 11. Brix levels are between 17 and 20. India is expected to export 4000 x 40ft containers this season.

Volumes this season should be recovered after last year's dip to levels seen in previous years. At the moment Fresh Express Logistics are packing Thompson Seedless, Sonaka Long Seedless and Black Seedless. The company trades under the UNIGRAPE label and deals with country specific import partners. "Our farms and grapes we export are of course GLOBALGAP certified. The product is certified and tested for pesticide residue MRLs from reputed International certifying agencies. Fresh Express follows HACCP procedures and has a comprehensive quality and traceability program in place to ensure that our customers get the very best!" explains Nina.

The trend for exported Indian grapes has been to diversify into new markets and lessen the dependence on the UK market. Fresh Express has followed this trend and now exports to the Middle East, East Asia, Eastern Europe, Russia, UK and the EU.

Also in keeping with the times, as a company and grower/producer, Fresh Express has consciously increased focus on ‘ Integrated Pest Management’ with the use of more and more ‘natural and biological controls‘. "We have made a conscious shift to using less packaging which also means less waste. Active promotion of recyclable materials is another way of ensuring steps are taken to deliver quality produce in harmony with the environment," explains Nina.
