Peru: Pomegranate exports grew by 197.1% in 2011

In 2011 Peruvian pomegranate exports grew 197.1% up to USD$ 11.2 million and in volume it expanded 176.2% up to 3943.1 MT. The strong increase in exports in 2011 was explained by higher sales to the United Kingdom (509.4% of growth), Germany (465.1%), Russia (253.2%), the Netherlands (189.4%) and USA (123.8%). In the last 10 years pomegranate exports have grown steadily at an average annual rate of 60.6% due to higher shipments to the Netherlands and Russia, and to a lesser extent Britain and the U.S.; exports for this product will continue to grow over the coming years, as Peru's participation in that market, is still very small (less than 1%).

In 2011 the main export companies were: Agrícola Athos (50% share of the export value), Exportadora Frutícola of Peru (25.7%), Inversiones Nivama (10.3%), Agrícola los Médanos (7.4%), Tal (1.4%) and Inca Frut (1.2%), according to alert@economica.
