"From the start we concentrated on quality" the grower continued. "Edible germinated seed is a delicate product and freshness is number one." The company Kiem-X grew steadily. The start was difficult. We had to force ourselves into the market, but after two years things improved. In the meantime we have already added to the premises twice, moved once and work now with six employees". Wim mentions that there are a few growers of edible germinated seeds in Belgium. "They are also imported from the Netherlands. I think we are one of the bigger ones in this country. "Kiem-X offers about 11 varieties of edible germinated seeds, the classical ones. The products are sold via REO-Auctionhouse and Mechelse Veilingen. Most important clients are wholesalers and supermarkets."
The edible germinated seed sector was hard hit last year at the time of the EHEC-crisis. "We certainly also felt it" the entrepreneur agrees. "We had just moved into our new building and invested a fair amount. "The timing could not have been worse. Nevertheless I think the Netherlands and Germany suffered most. During the summer sales plunged by 50%, but in my opinion this was a lot more in the Netherlands and Germany. Borders are very important in a calamity like this. During autumn our sales quietly recuperated."
Wim stresses that food safety and health are important pillars with Kiem-X. "All seeds are disinfected. We work for quality, freshness and safety and in this disinfection is an extra step. This is also compulsory in the US." the owner tells. "I expect that this rule will apply on the European level as well shortly. Not all seeds were disinfected before the EHEC-problem, but now we do. We also grow with cold well water. This is good for the micro hygiene. "Within a few weeks Wim wants to start (for the time being on a limited scale) producing organic edible germinated seeds. "These seeds will not be disinfected as it is not allowed."
Wim is positive about the new year. "We are back at the level before EHEC and the production is clearly increasing. I also expect demand for edible germinated seeds to increase in the coming years. The products fit into a healthy feeding pattern and I think it will only go better from now on."
